Obesity can lead to other serious health conditions, such as certain types of cancer, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and Type 2 diabetes. If you are 100 pounds or more over your healthy body weight or have a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or higher, you may be a candidate for weight loss surgery.
Th term morbid obesity is commonly associated with surgical weight loss. There are several qualifying factors identified by medical professionals that define morbid obesity, including:
- You weigh 100 pounds or more over your ideal body weight.

How weight loss surgery works
There are two primary approaches to bariatric surgery: restrictive and malabsorptive procedures. A restrictive procedure decreases the amount of food a person can eat, so they can feel full faster and experience reduced feelings of hunger. Restrictive procedures work by reducing the amount of food that can be consumed, but they do not affect digestion of food.
Malabsorptive procedures alter the digestive process of food by shortening the amount of time food spends in the digestive tract. This is often accomplished through surgically altering the small intestine, therefore limiting the amount of time calories have to be absorbed.
Sometimes, a mixed procedure may be performed, which combines both approaches to reduce the size of the stomach and restrict the absorption of calories.
Bariatric surgery options
We offer all qualifying patients with surgical options for weight loss, including:
- Sleeve gastrectomy—Also referred to as gastric sleeve, this procedure reduces the size of the stomach by creating a stomach "sleeve." The stomach becomes about the size of a banana and the rest is permanently removed. This procedure facilitates weight loss by restricting the amount of food the stomach can hold.
- Gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y)—This procedure reduces the size of the stomach and connects it directly to the small intestine. This allows for less food to be consumed and for food to bypass the majority of the stomach and part of the small intestine.
- Revisional bariatric surgery—This is a corrective surgery that aims to help patients achieve significant weight loss if they were unable after an initial surgery or due to complications from a previous bariatric procedure.
For some patients, a robotic-assisted procedure may be an option. Talk to your doctor about robotic surgery options for weight loss.
